Stop waiting for motivation: How moms can get things done anyway
Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought, “What happened to me?”
Not just to your hair.
Not just to the dark circles under your eyes.
But to the woman who used to have goals.
Dreams.
Ideas.
The woman who could sit down, make a plan, and actually do the thing.
Now?
You have laundry waiting.
Kids asking questions.
A kitchen that somehow gets dirty five minutes after you cleaned it.
Messages you haven't answered.
And somewhere in the middle of keeping everyone else moving, your own dreams have been sitting quietly on the shelf.
You keep telling yourself:
“I'll start when things calm down.”
But Mama… what if things don't calm down?
What if the secret isn't finding the perfect time?
What if you simply need to learn how to start when you don't feel like starting?
Because motivation is unreliable.
Especially when you're exhausted.
So here are three slightly unconventional but surprisingly effective ways to get yourself moving.
1. Remind yourself: Other people have done this before
Sometimes we make our dreams feel impossibly complicated.
We think:
Who am I to do this?
What if I'm not smart enough?
What if I fail?
What if I'm already too far behind?
And meanwhile, someone somewhere is doing the exact thing you're afraid to attempt.
Here's the lovingly blunt reminder:
People with fewer resources, less preparation, less experience, and fewer qualifications have figured things out before.
They didn't necessarily have more confidence.
They just started.
They Googled things.
They asked questions.
They made embarrassing mistakes.
They submitted imperfect applications.
They showed up nervous.
They learned as they went.
So when your brain starts telling you that your dream is “too hard,” you can answer:
“Okay. But has someone else done something like this before?”
If the answer is yes, there's your evidence.
You don't need to know everything.
You need to believe that you are capable of learning what you don't know yet.
And Mama, please stop requiring yourself to feel confident before you begin.
Confidence often comes after action, not before it.
2. Bribe yourself like a toddler
Let's be honest.
Sometimes inspiration isn't coming.
The vision board isn't working.
The inspirational quote isn't working.
You are simply sitting there staring at your laptop like it personally offended you. 😂
That's okay.
You don't always need motivation.
Sometimes you need a tiny reward system.
Pick something you genuinely enjoy.
Coffee.
Your favorite snack.
Ten minutes of scrolling.
A walk.
An episode of your favorite show.
Then make a deal with yourself:
“I can have that after I start.”
Not after you finish the entire project.
Not after you completely transform your life.
After you start.
Write the first paragraph.
Open the application.
Send the email.
Spend ten minutes researching.
Put on your workout clothes.
Take the first step.
Then reward yourself.
This isn't childish.
It's actually a practical way to make an intimidating task feel more approachable.
You're teaching your brain:
Starting doesn't have to feel terrible.
And here's the important part:
Don't make the reward so big that it becomes another way to procrastinate.
We're not negotiating a three-hour spa day for answering one email. 😂
Keep it small.
Keep it immediate.
Keep it doable.
3. Change your environment
Sometimes you don't have a motivation problem.
You have an environmental problem.
If you're lying on your bed trying to work on your dream business, your brain might have a completely different plan.
Nap.
If you're sitting on the couch with your laptop, suddenly the couch feels like it was specifically designed for procrastination.
So move.
Get out of the room.
Put your shoes on.
Go somewhere that makes you feel awake.
A coffee shop.
The library.
A coworking space.
Even a different chair at the dining table.
Sometimes simply changing your surroundings tells your brain:
“Okay. We're doing something different now.”
And yes, there's something about sitting in a coffee shop with your laptop that makes you feel like you have a very important meeting with the United Nations. 😂☕
Use it.
You don't have to make everything harder than it needs to be.
If your current environment keeps pulling you toward sleep, scrolling, cleaning, or distraction, change the environment instead of blaming yourself.
But what if you only have 10 minutes?
Then give yourself ten minutes.
That's it.
You don't need a perfect morning routine.
You don't need three uninterrupted hours.
You don't need childcare for the entire day.
You don't need your house to be clean.
You don't need everyone else's approval.
You need a starting point.
Ten minutes of writing.
Ten minutes of planning.
Ten minutes of learning.
Ten minutes of working toward the business.
Ten minutes of updating your résumé.
Ten minutes of remembering that you are a woman with dreams not just a woman with responsibilities.
And maybe those ten minutes turn into twenty.
Maybe they don't.
Either way, you started.
And starting changes something.
It reminds you that you're still capable of choosing something for yourself.
You have don't to feel ready
Mama, I know you're tired.
I know your days are full.
I know sometimes even taking a shower feels like an item requiring project management.
So I'm not going to tell you to “just hustle.”
That's not the point.
The point is that your dreams deserve some movement, even if that movement is tiny.
You can be tired and still take one step.
You can be afraid and still send the email.
You can feel completely unprepared and still begin learning.
You can be a mother who is deeply devoted to her family and a woman who is building something of her own.
Your dream doesn't have to demand everything from you.
It just needs you to stop abandoning it completely.
So tomorrow, when you don't feel like starting, don't wait for motivation.
Tell yourself:
Someone has done something like this before. I can learn.
Give yourself a tiny reward.
Change your environment.
And then…
Begin.
Not perfectly.
Not confidently.
Not with your entire life figured out.
Just begin.
Because the woman you're hoping to become isn't waiting for you at the finish line.
She's built one small beginning at a time.
And she may be much closer than you think.
